Saving the Land that Sustains Us, a new film from American Farmland Trust and Common Table Creative is about small farmers, agriculture and some of the big questions about food security we are all grappling with. It also features our close friend, Alexis Koefoed, the innovative flower farmer, olive oil producer and steward of Soul Food Farm.
โFarming is an extension of who you are โฆ do you feel moved to create beautiful things? โ - Alexis Koefoed
Soul Food Farm is a family farm located in Solano County, California. This 55 acres of prime pasture and farmland in Vacaville, CA. is located on Pleasants Valley Road, an historical agricultural area here in the SF Bay Area. Alexis and Eric (Alexisโ husband) planted over 300 olive trees when they first purchased the land in the 1990s. Their olive oil (available for purchase) is seriously one of the best in our region. Growing flowers at the farm is one of Alexisโ favorite enterprises these days.
Soul Food offers both a seasonal flower CSA and this summer, a u-pick experience at the flower farm. And Soul Foodโs farm stand is open every Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 8-5. The beautiful curated farm stand features organic flowers, herbs & vegetables, organic eggs, yarn from the resident sheep, olive oil, handcrafted soaps and more. Alexis also utilizes her platform to share her space to feature other local farmers from the area each weekend. And, did I mention the coffee truck and local pastries?
If you find yourself inspired by this video to create more, to support local farms or to get your hands in the dirt, I recommend stopping by the first in a series of workshops Iโll be leading with Alexis and Morningsun Herb Farmโs Rose Loveall.
